Jay Miller at the Winery

CORONA DE ARAGÓN continues providing information and promoting wine culture by means of its “CORONA DE ARAGÓN restaurant and gastronomy Hall” in a new edition which this year has scheduled an extensive programme of lectures given by leading sommeliers of Spain to their Aragonese colleagues.

To the already premium group of leading national figures, two other distinguished speakers were added this month: Jay Miller, the American specialist in charge of tasting Spanish wines for the guide of the renowned critic Robert Parker “The Wine Advocate” and Pancho Campo, chairman of The Wine Academy of Spain and Master of Wine.

In one of the tasting rooms of Grandes Vinos y Viñedos, more than 40 sommeliers and maîtres and other professionals of the Aragonese hotel and catering sector found out firsthand how The Wine Advocate magazine works and the reasons for the worldwide prestige of the “Parker points”, as well as the outstanding reputation that Aragonese wines, and in particular those made from the garnacha grape, are currently enjoying in the American and global market.

After the conference, the attendees also enjoyed seeing Jay Miller taste and score the wines, a former clinical psychologist who has now been collaborating with Robert Parker for 25 years which highlighted the excellent quality-price ratio of the CORONA DE ARAGÓN wines and gave an outstanding score to two of them, the ANAYÓN GARNACHA 2008 was given 91 points and the CORONA DE ARAGÓN SPECIAL SELECTION GARNACHA/CARIÑENA 2009 achieved 90 points.

The chat at the end also allowed people to enjoy GARNACCIO, the latest addition to the Bodega, a fortified wine based on garnacha and the study of its behaviour in the different phases, growing, aging and distillation, which has all led to an amazing drink.

GARNACCIO, our latest creation

The launch of the new Professional Association of Bartenders of Aragon last month was the venue chosen by CORONA DE ARAGÓN to present their latest release: GARNACCIO, an innovative, new product within the national scope of alcoholic drinks.

GARNACCIO is derived from the Bodega’s firm commitment to innovation, which, after studying the varieties of grape, specifically the most famous one, the Garnacha, and their behaviour in the different phases, growing, aging, distillation, has led to the creation of an amazing drink.

The combination of the virgin must of the garnacha, from the distillate of the same variety, and its aging process in American oak barrels for several months, means that GARNACCIO takes on the name, colour and richness of the garnacha grape; the character, consistency and smoothness of wood and time.

Very smooth, harmonious and surprising, GARNACCIO is characterised by the wide variety of occasions on which it can be enjoyed, as an aperitif, after lunch or dinner, or at night, as a long, mixed drink or in a multitude of different ways, not just in a short glass with ice and a slice of orange peel, as recommended, but also mixed with a bit of imagination to create new combinations.

This possibility of also being included in the cocktail section, as demonstrated by the two bar managers from O’clock and Belmondo in Madrid during the presentation of the Association of Bartenders of Aragon, helps to put GARNACCIO in a new category of spirits.

CORONA DE ARAGÓN, outstanding in the Wines of Spain 2010 issue by ROBERT PARKER.

The points and tasting notes for Spanish wines “SPAIN 2010” have just been published in issue number 188 of THE WINE ADVOCATE, the world’s most prestigious wine magazine founded in 1984 by Robert Parker, who for more than decade has been considered as the most influential wine critic in the world and whose scores, using the 50 to 100 points system not only give a master class but also determine the sometimes meteoric highs and lows of wines on the international market, especially those corresponding to the highest scoring wines.

Jay Miller, a specialist in Spanish wines and one of the most prominent members of the team of assessors of the American critic has underlined in particular the wide variety in our country and the excellent quality / price of Spanish wines, emphasising in particular the collection produced at our Bodega “it is packed with impressive values”.

The two wines tasted from CORONA DE ARAGÓN received an outstanding score of 89 points, the CORONA DE ARAGÓN OLD VINE GARNACHA 2009, a varietal of Garnacha from old vines that is aged for 4 months in a new French oak barrel and the “terrific value” CORONA DE ARAGÓN Special Selection 2008, a Garnacha/Cariñena aged for 5 months in a new French oak barrel.

Third Wine Solidarity Campaign

On 29 October, the Third Wine Solidarity Campaign was presented, which CORONA DE ARAGÓN and the Down Foundation of Zaragoza have consolidated, and all of whose profits are dedicated to financing different programmes from the Foundation.
In the two previous campaigns, more than 42,000 bottles were sold and more than 60,000 euros were raised, respectively used to provide computer equipment and contract sports educators.

The profits from this Third Campaign will be used to pay for projects for vocational training and job placements for people with intellectual disabilities, a group who are especially vulnerable at this time of economic crisis and high unemployment.
The presentation of the Campaign was attended by the Chairwoman of the Foundation, Ruth Gonzalo, and Iñaki Goñi, Head of Sales at Sabeco/Simply, the company responsible for distributing the wine at all of its outlets in Zaragoza, together with Pilar Andrade, Chairwoman of the Young Entrepreneurs’ Association of Zaragoza, who will be heading this year’s initiative and announced that it will be promoting the Wine Solidarity Campaign amongst its more than 400 members.

CORONA DE ARAGÓN will be labelling 3 of its finest wines – its white Macabeo/Chardonnay, Crianza and Gran Reserva – as ‘SOLIDARITY WINE’, with an illustration from María Sancho, winner of the Drawing Competition recently organised by the Foundation with the theme of the Campaign as its title.

New features for promoting the wine in this campaign will be the production of a publicity spot for regional television, and the organisation of a Solidarity Concert with performances by Daniel Zueras and Ámbar Martiatu, accompanied by other singers from Aragón including Richi from Bogus Band, the members of Vocal Tempo, and Joaquín Carbonell.

VI Cooks of Aragon Competition. The art of cooking with wine

On 25 November, the TOPI-Picarral School of Hostelry held the final stage of the Sixth “Lorenzo Acín” Cooks of Aragón Competition, organised by the Cooks of Aragón Association and sponsored by CORONA DE ARAGÓN, which provided all of the cash prizes for the winners.

With the title “The art of cooking with wine”, all of the dishes had to contain wine from the ranges CORONA DE ARAGÓN, CORONA DE ARAGÓN DISPARATES or ANAYÓN in their ingredients.

Two of the Winery’s main objectives, which were completely fulfilled at the event, were to promote the brand image of CORONA DE ARAGÓN as a leading label from the wine sector in Aragón, associated with high-quality and innovative cooking in a competition that has never been held before in our Region, and to associate wine with gastronomy, promoting its properties as an ingredient and distancing it from the image as an alcoholic beverage it has recently been associated with.

The jury, consisting of leading gastronomic figures from the city – the Gastronomic Academy of Aragón, the Association of Sommeliers, the Association of Maîtres, the Association of Cooks and Horeca – together with leading food journalists, took four facets into account when evaluating the dishes: their originality, presentation, use of products from Aragón and CORONA DE ARAGÓN wines, and the tasting.

“Aragonese lamb sausage perfumed with Graus truffle and ANAYÓN wine with potatoes”, “Gold, earth, lamb and wines from CORONA DE ARAGÓN”, and “Peach filled with CORONA DE ARAGÓN DISPARATES MERLOT over crushed cacao, with a cold wine and fruit powder” were just some of the dishes presented by the competitors, who according to Domingo Mancho, Chairman of the Cooks of Aragón Association, “are amongst the finest to be found in the world of Spanish haute cuisine.”

The prize giving ceremony took place on the following day in Sástago Palace in Zaragoza, as part of the Gastronomic Workshops of the Province of Zaragoza, organized by the Provincial Government of Zaragoza.

Juan Ramón Sau and Enrique Ciria, cooks who work under Carmelo Bosque in Huesca’s Lillas Pastia restaurant – with a Michelin star – were the absolute winners of the Competition, and received the 3,000 euros prize money.
Second place, with a prize of 2,000 euros, went to the cook from Zaragoza, Diego Barbero Pina, head cook at the Mesón Los Arcos in Montañana.
Third place, with a prize of 1,000 euros, went to Antonio Arrabal Jiménez, a cook from Aragón currently working in the city of Burgos.
The best innovative dish from a young cook (below the age of 25), also with a prize of 1,000 euros, went to Juan Antonio Forcén, from the Venta del Sotón in Esquedas (Huesca).

Sponsorship of Ridley Scott´s film "A GOOD YEAR"

CORONA DE ARAGÓN is also the perfect accompaniment to the best cinema.

The third of November saw the release of Sir Ridley Scott’s latest film, “A Good Year.” Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe returned to the screen with the director of “Gladiator”, in a production from 20th Century Fox telling the story of how Max Skinner (Russell Crowe), a high-flying investment broker living in London, travels to Provence to sell a small vineyard he has inherited following his uncle’s death. At first unimpressed by this new project, Max discovers what will be a new and stimulating stage of his life, when he gradually realises how it is worth the effort to get the very most out of life.
Special Bottle

Our Winery has signed an agreement with 20th Century Fox to be its main partner in the promotion of the film in Spain, with another leader in its sector, the department store El Corte Inglés, selected for its distribution at national level. To continue enjoying the film “A Good Year” at home, the first 30,000 people who show their tickets to the film in any El Corte Inglés supermarket or department store will receive as a special gift a bottle of “Corona de Aragón: A Good Year”, our young Corona de Aragón wine, with a personalised label showing a still from the film.
Invitation.

To celebrate with our clients our “GOOD YEAR”, which has included the launch of the collection “CORONA DE ARAGÓN DISPARATES”, 21 medals received at the most prestigious international wine awards and the sponsorship of the Expo 2008, we have launched a special cinema promotion, with free invitations for two people to see the film “A Good Year” for buying a box of Corona de Aragón Disparates. The two invitations included in the box can be exchanged for tickets on any day and for any session, at the box offices of cinemas with the CHEQUECINE sign.

National Geographic.

As a separate but parallel promotion, and as a result of our agreement with Fox, the Tourism Board of the Wines of Zaragoza Protected Designation of Origin has signed a documentary deal with National Geographic, entitled “A Good Year: The Lives of Wine”, combining images from the film with others on Zaragoza and its wines. This is yet another action that will also benefit and promote our sales in Spain, as apart from the promotional actions that are planned, the documentary will be shown in several sessions on National Geographic’s Spanish TV channel.

Pre-release on 2 November

Another of the many advantages resulting from this agreement, apart from promoting the CORONA DE ARAGÓN trademark in the publicity campaign for the film at national level, was the pre-release session of the film shown at the Grancasa cinema in Zaragoza, one day before its national release, to our distributors, best clients, personalities from the hostelry sector in Aragón, political figures and the media. One hour before the film, and while the guests arrived, a tasting was offered in the foyer to the cinema of two of the most widely-praised wines from the CORONA DE ARAGÓN DISPARATES collection, Syrah and Cariñena, accompanied by the finest cured hams from the Teruel Designation of Origin, prepared on the spot by two professional cutters. This celebratory event allowed us to share our “Good Year” with all of our guests, and was warmly received due to its originality.

Sponsorship of Expo Zaragoza 2008

On 14th September, in the presence of Juan Alberto Belloch, the Mayor of Zaragoza, Santiago Campos, Chairman of CORONA DE ARAGÓN and Roque Gistau, Chairman of the State-owned Company EXPOAGUA, an agreement was signed the Winery’s sponsorship of the International Expo in Zaragoza, which will be held from 14 June to 14 September 2008, whose main theme is “Water and Sustainable Development.”

Expo Zaragoza 2008 is an excellent promotional platform which will allow our CORONA DE ARAGÓN brand to be associated with another trademark of internationally recognised prestige, the EXPO, at the same time as being a perfect moment to enter and be recognised in the market as a company with a responsible approach towards the use of water as a resource, and with a commitment towards sustainable development, with the support of an excellent platform such as an event of this scale.

The sponsorship deal involves four main areas: Image and publicity, Hospitality and public relations during the Expo, Business Opportunities within the Expo grounds, and tax benefits from the signing of the deal until the end of the Expo.

The major investment represented by this sponsorship is a reflection of the firm commitment by CORONA DE ARAGÓN to consolidate the brand in the hostelry market and in the specialised stores where it is distributed, at both national and international level.
